| Ali Farka Toure - Savane |
| Kod: |
| Afrički "bluz" gitarista, album za svaku pohvalu
Before his death in 2006, Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure recorded some sessions in the Hotel Mande in Bamako, Mali. ‘Savane’, released posthumously, is taken from those sessions, and it bears testament to Farka Toure’s standing as one of the giants of contemporary African music. The hallmarks of the artist’s work are all here: gentle, mesmerizing tunes centered on sinuous, circular guitar patterns, and evocative vocal lines that float above the music and work in dialogue with the percussion. A valuable addition to Farka Toure’s catalogue, ‘Savane’ is a beautiful, elegant swan song that belongs alongside the artist’s best work. |

| Salif Kaita - "Folon" |
| Kod: |
| One of the most creative and downright interesting of the African artists who have achieved a measure of popularity in the West is Salif Keita, who has just released a new recording entitled Folon... The Past.
Keita's biography is as remarkable as his music. In fact, he was the subject of a BBC documentary a few years back. A native of Mali, Keita was born into a prominent royal family who are descendants of the 13th Century king Sunjiata Keita who founded the Mandinka Empire in West Africa in 1240. But Salif Keita was born an albino in a land where those with the condition were ostracized and even sacrificed in an earlier day. Rejected by his father, Keita was turned onto the streets as a teenager, where he resorted to music and his family's tradition of the griot or storyteller to make a living. In the Malian capital of Bamako, Keita began to make a name for himself, first as a part of a group called the Rail Band, then as Zaire's Les Ambassadeurs, who achieved fame even as far away as America. Like other prominent African musicians at the time, Keita settled in Paris, and began recording there. His first US release, Soro from 1987 was memorable and influential recording that combined Western pop influences with the plaintive vocal style that is a West African tradition. The album featured a mixture of traditional instruments such as the Malian kora and percussion with synthesizers and electric guitars. In recent years, Keita has been travelling extensively in Europe and America and absorbing influences everywhere. And for the first time, Keita toured throughout Africa, discovering and assimilating South African sounds, especially the mbqanga style which is quite distinct from West African traditional or contemporary music. In fact, Keita had the lyrics for one of the tunes he wrote for this album translated into Zulu. And there are plenty of Western pop influences on Folon... The Past, from a funky horn section to jazzy chord changes to New Age synthesizers and sonic ambiences that provide transitions between the songs. There's also a reggae styled piece and some almost folky sounding acoustic tracks. The result is a fascinating record that is at times danceable, at other times strikingly beautiful and at others vaguely exotic. |

| Ali Farka Toure, Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu [1994] |
| Kod: |
| Talking Timbuktu is a groundbreaking record that vividly illustrates the Africa-Blues connection in real time. Ali Farka Toure, one of Mali's leading singer-guitarists, has a trance-like, bluesy style that, although deeply rooted in Malian tradition, bears astonishing similarity to that of John Lee Hooker or even Canned Heat. It's a mono-chordal vamp, with repetitive song lines cut with shards of blistering solo runs that shimmer like a desert mirage. Toure may be conversant with some blues artists, but it is unlikely that artists like Hooker or Robert Pete Williams ever heard these Malian roots, which makes the connection so uncanny. Ry Cooder, well versed in domestic and world guitar styles, is the perfect counterpoint in these extended songs/jams, his sinewy slide guitar intertwining with his partner's in a super world summit without barriers or borders. --Derek Rath |

| The Kampala Sound - 1960s Ugandan Dance Music
Original Music (192 k) |
| Kod: |
| Though some may find it too mild, here is the most plainly irresistible John Storm Roberts compilation since Africa Dances. Roberts credits mission-school melodies and natural Bagandan rhythms for the simple, striking, singsong charm of this Nairobi-recorded, Kinshasa-dominated "1960s Ugandan dance music"; note also the r&b-derived basslines of Charles Sonko underpinning whoever has his or her name on the label, and his sister Frida's modest vocals. Created for commercial gain in a Ugandan market that pre-Amin enjoyed the ultimate gift, existence, the music floats in on an innocence of intent that escapes today's self-consciously folkloric African culture preservers. Imminent brutalization lends its lyricism a poignancy I hope no one involved had any inkling of at the time--unless, of course, foresight helped save their lives.

| MAMANI KEITA
YELEMA (2006) 320 KBPS Here, you'll be impressed with the uplifting beats, the simple guitar and horn riffs (think Mr Scruff) led astray by the ever-so-slightly nasal but powerful voice of Mamani Keita chanting the intoxicatingly repetitive refrains. Malian music at its best under the patronage of label-mate Nicolas Repac. Another hit record for the quality label No Format! This pairing of warm West African sounds and grooves composed of repeated musical and vocal hooks works incredibly well. Off-kilter jazz riffs and electronica varies the diet and the pace lifts and falls throughout the dozen tracks aiming it a very satisfying album experience. Outstanding. 1. Djekafo 2. Lado 3. | Letta Mbulu - Letta Mbulu Sings/Free Soul (1967-1968) |
| Kod: |
| Letta Mbulu was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa. Still in her teens, Letta began touring outside of Africa with the musical King Kong, which ran for a year in England following a highly successful two-year run in South Africa. When the tour ended, she returned to South Africa but soon the policies of Apartheid were to force her to leave her native land for the U.S.A.
She arrived in the United States in 1965 and quickly befriended such fellow South African exiles in New York City as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa, all alumni of the King Kong musical. Performances at New York's famed Village Gate club began to attract attention to her talents, particularly from jazz legend Cannonball Adderley, who invited her to tour with him (which she did throughout the remainder of the decade). Letta Mbulu also displayed an early gift for writing joyful, memorable songs. These were showcased by no less an authority than Miriam Makeba on the singer's albums The MagnificentMiriam Makeba (“Akana Nkomo”), All About Miriam (“U Shaka”, “Jol'inkomo”) and Makeba (“U-Mngoma”, “Magwala Ndini”). Letta first made herself heard on records as part of Letta and the Safaris, a group featuring husband Caiphus Semenya and the South African husband and wife team of Jonas and Mamsie Gwangwa. A single, Walkin' Around was issued in 1966 by Columbia Records, but lack of publicity failed to garner much attention to the clever little R&B singer. Letta and Caiphus soon relocated to the West Coast, joining Hugh Masekela, who became a fixture of the California concert and recording scene. While there, producer David Axelrod fell under Letta's spell and had her signed to Capitol Records, home at the time to both the Beatles and the Beach Boys and where Axelrod himself was scoring big hits for Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley. Axelrod produced Letta's debut album, Letta Mbulu Sings (Capitol/1967), an immediately attractive collection of Township-style pop mixed with American R&B. It was a hugely enjoyable style that Ms. Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya could nearly patent as their own. Even though a single was released (the magnificent Ardeze b/w Pula Yetla), radio stations wouldn't play the record out of fear that no would understand the words. As a result, hardly anyone ever heard the record and, worse, sales were slight. Axelrod convinced Capitol to give Letta another chance. The following year he produced the singer's majestic Free Soul, as near perfect a collection of afro-pop as has ever been waxed, this time dropping Letta's surname, but in odd contrast, featuring the beautiful young Letta on the cover swathed in colorful afro-centric clothing. This album compiles these two fabulous LP's! |

the pleasure off seeing them at last years Electic Picnic, great boogie tunes. The album is somewhat spoiled by Manu Chao's silly production, in one song he even has ambulance sirens going off (see Video) and he rears his head on one track, which is the only bad track on the album. http://www.mediafire.com/?9tm1qlmrkdm |

| Kod: |
| This cd is so massive it is almost scary. Imagine a thunderous herd of 1000 African elephants charging and you might get an idea of how huge the sound on this cd really is! Not much more can be said about the utter funk present within an innocent enough cd. This should be in every music collection, especially for funk freakes and rhythm junkies. |

| A Hawk and a Hacksaw - The Way the Wind Blows |
| Kod: |
| A woozy saxophone welcomes us to A Hawk and a Hacksaw’s third album, The Way the Wind Blows. Drunk in the mid-afternoon Marrakech sun, it segues into snake charming soundtrack territory before embarking on a balmy Balkan evening river ride wherein Jeremy Barnes (A Hawk and a Hacksaw himself) states that “Swimming is not so dangerous / If you only give it a try” atop Mariachi trumpets and a militaristic march.
Partly recorded in a remote Romanian village with members of the Balkan folk group, Fanfare Ciocarlia, The Way the Wind Blows is as nomadic as its creator. Barnes grew up in New Mexico, moved to Chicago for school, and dropped out to drum in Neutral Milk Hotel. Following their demise, he lent his handiwork to Bablicon, Bright Eyes, and Broadcast, before settling in Leicester, England to become a postman (he liked the uniform) and volunteer at a refugee hostel, playing music with asylum seekers from Iraq, Kurdistan, the Czech Republic, and Bulgaria. This eclectic exposure influenced AHAAH’s self-titled debut album, which was recorded in France and featured loose piano-based songs augmented by a barnyard-full of instruments (including, yes, a rooster’s call). From England, Barnes moved to Prague, writing second album Darkness at Noon, before returning to New Mexico. It was here that he met violinist, Heather Trost, who became a permanent second member of the group, adding an extra dimension to what was essentially a one-man-band. In April of 2006, Barnes got the urge to go again. Life savings in hand, he embarked on a mythic quest of ‘golden fleece’-like proportions to track down renowned gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia. With nothing more than a phone number to go on, Barnes found them in the tiny Moldovan village of Zece Prajini and set up a makeshift studio in the front room of a house where he and the band bonded and recorded. The result is a rousing record, meshing gypsy instrumentation (accordion, violin), a brash brass band, carnival caravan percussion, and Barnes’ chant like vocals. It has an obvious sense of authenticity that previous AHAAH albums lacked (in essence, but not necessarily in sound), and veers from instrumentals so layered they feel lyrical, to vocal songs whose lines range from weighty (“Your men won’t protect you from destiny”) to whimsical (“Don’t be afraid / The moon is your home.”) Musically, The Way the Wind Blows bursts and builds in equal measure; “Fernando’s Giampari” trumpets its arrival with, well, trumpets, while, “God Bless the Ottoman Empire” floats from muted flamenco guitar into Middle Eastern market music before settling on a Gregorian chant over what sounds like a child ice-skating inside a piano. Only on album opener “In the River” does Barnes come close to sounding conventional; it’s Calexico cavorting across Europe, skipping styles like a stone skimming water, dropping in and out before finally sinking inside a saxophone. And though the album sags a little towards the end, with a few shorter instrumental numbers, it’s still an invigorating journey, a caravan of cavorting musicians, careening through the countryside, stopping only to play festivals and funerals. This review without wouldn’t be complete without mentioning today’s two better known Balkan burglars: Beirut, whose Zach Condon played on The Way the Wind Blows (AHAAH also moonlight as members of his backing band), and Gogol Bordello. But whereas these two more commercially acclaimed bands attach Balkan influence to their existing song structures, folk (Beirut) and punk (Gogol Bordello), AHAAH negates song structures in the formal sense, and is, rather than Western music accented by Eastern European influences, purely Balkan; not in name, not in nationality, but in sound and spirit. |

| The Daktaris-1998 - Soul Explosion |
| Kod: |
| It's true what you heard. The undisputed heavyweight afro-funk album of the decade is coming out of retirement. Soon after its release in the early Desco days, the Daktaris' Soul Explosion became a sought after funk classic and has since become a staple in every serious funk and afro-funk collection. As Peter Franklin of Abidjan Musique says, "The Daktaris is a well-disciplined army of two hundred African Bull Elephants marching relentlessly up your business to the beat from Funky Drummer."

| Afel Bocoum-Alkibar |
| Kod: |
| World Circuit has quickly distinguished themselves with such gems as Ali Farke Toure and Ry Cooder's decade-best Talking Timbuktu, Malian songstress Oumou Sangare's lively Worotan, and a little something called the Buena Vista Social Club. Add Malian Afel Bocoum's Alkibar to the list. Picture Dale Watson and Willie Nelson playing on the banks of the Colorado, and you'll get the gist of this 10-song, one-hour debut. Bocoum is like Watson, a young, talented singer/writer/performer, while Willie's elder statesman role is personified by Ali Farke Toure, Mali's most famous export. Toure's guitar mastery is only featured in two songs -- the Coen-Brothers-dream-sequence "Yarabitala" and the admonishing "Jaman Moro" -- but Bocoum and Toure have performed together for decades, with the student absorbing much from the maestro. Bocoum's expressive singing, punctuated guitaring, and superb choice in accompanying instruments (two-string lute, djembe, calabash drums, three singers, guitar, and spike fiddle) reveal Toure's tutelage. Think Delta blues, rural acoustic music where slinky guitar runs respond to vocal calls, like the very polyrhythmic and animated "Jeeny." Or the many-sided, swelling opener "Alasidi," where calabash drums crack beats like Sammy Davis tap dancing. Like most World Circuit studio releases, Alkibar was transparently recorded by Jerry Boys, taped out in the country by the banks of Mali's Niger River. The result is a live, breathy document of the torch passing from master to disciple. |

| Kod: |
| This is the third Nigerian Special mix compiled by the wonderful people at Soundway records. It is arguably the best of the mixes so far. It gives listeners a glimpse into the rock scene and sounds that I guess "rocked" the students all around the underground spots on University campuses in Lagos and Ibadan in the 1970s. Highly influenced by the rock greats like Jimi Hendrix and soul funk artistes, it is hard to deny the greatness that this mix packs.

| Drawing on Nigerian music recorded between the 1950s and 1980s, this compilation from the Vampisoul label covers a remarkable breadth of material in its hour or so of playback time, drawing on all the various elements that informed Nigeria's musical output during this particularly fertile period. Fela Kuti, Tony Allen and Africa 70 are the best known names on the collection, but the likes of Dr. Victor Olaiya and Opotopo make no less valid contributions, with the latter taking the sounds of highlife and Latin-influenced percussive routines while the former goes for a bit of a James Brown-styled approach to funk. The Tony Allen/Africa 70 recordings sound particularly progressive in their fusion of genres, taking on jazz and disco influences and knitting them into indigenous African rhythms. Another great Vampisoul compilation, and a particularly condensed overview of Nigerian music, making for a great entry point for |

| Nigeria 70 - Lagos Jump: Original Heavyweight Afrobeat, Highlife & Afro-Funk |
| Kod: |
| A killer follow-up to the earlier Nigeria 70 compilation on Strut Records -- a second set that digs even deeper than before, and one that shows a huge range of Nigerian grooves from the 70s! The styles here go way beyond familiar Afro Funk -- and the rhythms here are often quite complicated -- rootsy at times, modern at others -- and served up in a blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation that dances together wonderfully! Most numbers have vocals, but those are often delivered as rhythmically as the instrumentation -- and the package is filled with under-reissued gems that make the package an essential addition to any collection of global grooves. |

| Monomono- Dawn of Awareness |
| Kod: |
| Dawn of Awareness" was released on Capitol Records in 1974 to little critical acclaim. Friday Jumbo, the leader of Monomono was a member of Fela's group before he joined forces with vocalist Joni Hasstrup and bassist Kenneth Okulolo to form Monomono. The opening track entitled "Awareness Is What You Need" really nails the Fela afro-beat sound while still creating it's own sound. "Ipade Aladun" is the longest track on here at just over eight minutes and it really cooks with soulful vocals laid over a bed of funky organs and keyboards. Lots of breaks and weird sound effects for the beat junkies on this track alone. At just under five minutes, "Tire Loma Da Nigbehin" is the epitome of Clift-notes for afro-beat with complex syncopated basslines, repetitive vocal refrains and incendiary organs |

| Fairuz - Good Friday Eastern Sacred Songs |
| Kod: |
| Born and educated in Beirut, Fairuz (Fayrouz, Fairouz) began her musical career as a chorus member at the Lebanese Radio Station. In the late 1950s her talent as a singer became fully acknowledged. Met with unprecedented enthusiasm, Fairuz's early songs featured the singer's distinct vocal timbre and lyrics expressing romantic love and nostalgia for village life. They meshed with a delicate orchestral blend in which certain Arab instruments figured prominently but which also subtly incorporated European instruments and European popular dance rythms.
This album evokes the magical and serene setting of Good Friday as celebrated in the Eastern Church. Recorded live in Church during Easter (1962-1965). Fairuz's voice creates a meditative atmosphere. |

| Femi Kuti - Day By Day |
| Kod: |
| Femi Kuti announced he will release his new album, Day by Day, November 18th on Downtown Records new imprint, Mercer Street. Femi Kuti, son of Afrobeat founder and African musical legend Fela Kuti, hasn't released a studio album in seven years. His younger brother, Seun, recently stole the spotlight from Femi as Fela's progeny and afrobeat torchbearer with his 2008 release, Many Things. With this release Femi, is taking back the mission pushing Afrobeat to the next level.
As Fela's oldest son, Femi played in his legendary father's band, Egypt 80, from a young age. He later broke away from Egypt 80 to start his own band, Positive Force, which played at The Shrine, Fela's home club in Lagos, Nigeria, one night a week. Femi has long displayed his father's passion for social justice and political action, but has differed from Fela on many fronts including religious views and the threat of AIDS. Femi collaborated with Mos Def, Common, and Jaguar Wright on his 2001 release, Fight to Win. On his new release, Day by Day, he emphasizes more of a jazz sound playing trumpet instead of saxophone on several tracks. Having spent seven years honing his style and learning to properly play the piano, Day by Day is expected to have a more refined, tight sound. After Seun's 2008 release, the world is eager to see what Femi has in store to stake his claim to Afrobeat's throne. |

| Nomo |
| Kod: |
| nn Arbor's Nomo is a large band with much to thank for Fela Kuti's pioneering afro-beat, along with other greats from the wide world of jazz. Starting with a University of Michigan grad named Elliot Bergman and friends. By the time of the first full length release, the self-titled Nomo, there were more than 60 contributing persons when records and live performances are totaled. The music is complex, as so many members might hint at, with clear infusions of jazz and funk but all of it in a theme very much part of afro-beat. |

| "Nearly ten year after its first release, this is a CD reissue of Garmarna's Väsen-inspired debut EP. The disc appends to the original EP, the group's six-song demo. This is also the introduction of vocalist Emma Härdelin, who sang two songs for the EP before joining the group. There is a natural darkness to this Nordic folk music of ancient songs and instruments. Adding warmth is the bright fiddle melodies, Jew's harp, and Härdelin's voice." |

| Bursting out of California's potent west coast music scene, PLOTZ! invites you to drink, dance and sweat! Their infectious sound erupts with hair-raising intensity, virtuosic facility, and twisted rhythmic complexity. Well mixed with a pinch of tender sensibility and a dash of devilish levity...It's PLOTZ! Mystical, crude, frenetic, and beautifully strange...
In March of 2005, Jake Vossler (guitars), Daniel Rosenboom (trumpets/keyboards), Orest Balaban (basses), and Austin Wrinkle (drums), came together to form a unique musical experience. Combining the sounds of Balkan folk music, rock, jazz improvisation, PLOTZ! created a style of music-making which is at once intriguing, fresh, electrifying, and absolutely wild! |

| An artiste of class whose music was inspired by his parents, the highlife crooner would be remembered for hit albums like, Ozondi Ewendi and Makojo. But before then, the legend had in his earlier days, released Enyi Mba Enyi, Late Patrice Lumumba, Nnamdi Azikwe, One Pound No Balance, Omonuju Aku, The First Raining Day, Onu Kwuru Njo Gekwu Mma, among many others.
Osadebe went through the mills of music making, and that accounted for his staying power on top of his profession. For instance, he started with what he tagged: Amakekwu, a genre that was in vogue in the 1950s. At different times, he played Kokoma of Ghanaian heritage, Kusimilaya, which was made popular by late Adeolu Akinsanya a.k.a. Baba Eto. By the time, he came up with his band, Osadebe soon became, what Fela was to afrobeat; a master. With his Oyolima music, Osadebe succeeded in uniting his listeners across the country. His music is laden with strong messages and his lyrics are prophetic. He once confessed that, during his sojourn in the U.S, his fans often ascribed therapeutic effects to his songs. Osadebe’s music growth drew from calypso, samba, rumba, jazz, waltz, all of which are the core formative elements of highlife in its rustic form. The outbreak of the civil war in 1967 significantly stalled the development of his art. By the mid-1970s, his career had reached its zenith with the release of Osadebe 75. Osita was a nationalist and a detribalized Nigerian having used his talent to reach out to Nigerians of diverse tribes. He demonstrated it by picking his first wife from Abeokuta, incidentally, she was late Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s relation. By that, Osadebe became Fela’s in-law. But beyond that, the duo still spared time to fraternize on the platform of music. He once recalled how Fela would come around to play with him in his club in Lagos, shortly after he formed the Koola Lobitos Band. He even had to suspend his show in the U.S. in 1997 when the news of Fela’s death filtered into the concert hall in 1997. He did not only call for a minute’s silence in his honour, he ensured that Fela’s music was played non-stop for about 30 minutes. In spite of the main headaches of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria(PMAN), the veteran artiste still stood by it even at old age. But he had a piece of advice for the leadership, PMAN should be decentralized and not be perceived as an association for only Lagos-based musicians. The elder artiste also counseled the younger generation of musicians to undergo apprenticeship. He decried a situation whereby someone who cannot play a musical instrument, still parades himself as a musician. Osadebe’s regret was that in spite of the abundant talents in the country, the society don’t appreciate them. Born in Atani Ogbaru, but raised in Onitsha, Anambra State, Osadebe started music as a chorister and a member of the schoolboys’ band. With time, he picked interest in traditional music genres before he had his break into contemporary music after watching a visiting band performed in Onitsha. He later approached the leader band and he obliged him to play an instrument and sing. By 1956, he went professional as a maracas player with the group, Empire Rhythm Skies. He moved to central Lagos in the late 1950s and that marked the beginning of his ascendancy to the apex of music entertainment in the country. Mentored by the late ace trumpeter, Zeal Onyia, it was in apparent recognition of his immense contributions to the nation’s arts, culture and entertainment sector that he was honoured with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by the Nigerian Government. He was also conferred with the traditional title of Ezeafuluke of Atani. |

| Tunde Williams - Mr. Big Mouth |
| Kod: |
| Essential Afrika 70 recordings, produced by Fela Kuti.
Babatunde 'Tunde' Williams was born in Nigeria, in 1943. Like Fela, his family was from Abeokuta, but his father was employed by the United Africa Company in the middle belt city of Makurdi, where Tunde was born in 1943. He attended primary school at Gboko Elementary School in the nearby town of Gboko, and later attended Katsina-Ala Middle School in the northern town of Katsina. Unbeknownst to most people, Tunde’s first instrument was percussion, and his earliest professional experience was as a conga, bongo, and traps player for various highlife bands in the early 1960s. By 1965 he was playing with the highlife band of Olu McFoy, and he later joined Atomic Eight, a highlife and copyright band from Aba in eastern Nigeria. It was in Atomic Eight that he befriended the bandleader Raymond Baba, a multi-instrumentalist who was proficient on both brass and woodwinds. Inspired by Baba’s example, Tunde switched from percussion to trumpet shortly thereafter, with Baba as his first teacher. He also cites Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis as formative influences on the instrument. Tunde joined Fela’s Koola Lobitos as a trumpeter in late 1967, and remained with Fela through 1978, when he and several other bandmembers left the group acrimoniously following the Berlin Jazz Festival in September of that year. In Afrika 70, he was the most consistent soloist, and his trumpet improvisations graced virtually of the band’s 1970s recordings. The tracks for Mr. Big Mouth had been recorded in 1975, but by the time they were released in 1977, Fela was engaged in a bitter battle with the original label, Decca Records. As a result, many of Afrika 70’s Decca releases from 1977-8 fell through the proverbial cracks, and Mr. Big Mouth was unfortunately one of them. Although it is a great album, it was given little promotion and as a result, is known only to the most committed Afrobeat aficionados, even in Nigeria. The music on Mr. Big Mouth is similar in feel and mood to other Afrika 70 releases from this time on Decca’s Afrodisia imprint such as Fela’s No Agreement, Stalemate, and Fear Not for Man, and Tony Allen’s No Accomodation for Lagos. The title track is typical of Afrika 70’s uptempo grooves and like much of Fela’s music the lyrics are socially-critical in tone, although unlike Fela’s songs, Tunde’s lyrics are not directed at the government. Rather, he says the title track was a commentary on “…some of the indigenous contractors at that time. The government would give these contractors money to complete a job, and instead they would take the money and surround themselves with women, fancy clothes, and flashy cars, and go around the town bragging like big shots. The jobs never got done, and many of them ended up going to jail for defrauding the government. That’s what I was singing about.” Tunde’s mid-tempo instrumental “The Beginning” (so named because it was his first piece of music to be recorded) is certainly one of the most infectious tracks to come out of Fela’s organization. The laid-back Afrobeat groove is dark and suspenseful, and one can easily hear why the song was often played during Afrika 70’s warm-up sets, as it perfectly sets the tone for a late, smoky night at the Afrika Shrine. |

| Xavier Rudd is a one-man band. On this album, he plays: guitars, drums, harmonica, didgeridoos, banjo, and ankle bells. Where else is he going to put the bells? There is nothing in the liner notes about Xavier Rudd keeping a cymbal strapped to the seat of his pants, although it wouldn't surprise me to find he does.
I don't play the didgeridoo and in fact, I wouldn't even know how to play it if you put one in my hands. I can tell you this much, though. Xavier Rudd knows how to play the didgeridoo and he produces some really cool sounds on them. The best example of his abilities with a didgeridoo is on "Yirra Kurl," a live track that really conveys his energy. I haven't seen him live, but I sure would like to, just to see how he manages all the instruments he uses. Vocally, Xavier Rudd is similar to Dave Matthews, although the X-man doesn't do as many strange vocal sounds as Dave Matthews. If I had to compare Rudd to one other person, it would be Steve Earle. Now, I have to make it clear that Rudd sounds nothing like Steve Earle. However, he writes very outspoken lyrics railing against violence ("Let Me Be") and corporations ("GBA"). Also, like Earle, Rudd writes beautiful songs about loving and losing ("Chances" and "Journey Song"). Rudd also takes on the issue of relations between the whites and aborigines of Australia. Clearly, he is not afraid to speak his mind about important issues, like Bob Marley, who is represented in Rudd's cover of "No Woman, No Cry." I admire that a lot. I think we need more artists to stand up and speak out for change. I don't know what Xavier Rudd would be filed under in your local record store. I imagine it would probably be in the world music section, but I think Xavier Rudd defies classification. That's another thing he has working in his favor. If you like multi-talented, outspoken artists, this is an album you need to have. |

| Feso Trombone - Freedom Train (1984) |
| Kod: |
| Fesobi Olawaiye, better known as Feso Trombone, played trombone with Fela Kuti in his country of origin Nigeria. He moved to Belgium in the late 70s, early 80s to develop his solo career as a musician. In the early 80s (83 or 84, I'm not sure), he recorded this record called Freedom Train on a local label called Antler Records (the label from Maurice Engelen from Pragha Khan), that mostly issued new-wave and early electronical music. But Freedom Train is an exception in Antlers catalogue. It is a pure Afro Funk/Afro Beat album. There's the very whipping up 'Beautiful World', that starts with a drum break, but my favorite track is 'Beginning of the end', with this typical hypnotic afro funk groove. The title track 'Freedom Train' was compiled on Essential Afrobeat: The Very Best Of Afrobeat, Selected By Dele Sosimi. This record was released on cd as well. |

| Tony Allen - Secret Agent
(CD) World Circuit WCD 082, 2009-06-08 Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa's finest kit drummer and one of the continent's most influential musicians. His playing draws on four different styles - highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional Nigerian drumming. A unique and mighty sound. Together with Fela Kuti (with whom he played for 15 years) Allen co-created Afrobeat - the hard driving, horns rich, funk-infused, politically insurrectionary style which became such a dominant force in African music and such an influence worldwide. 'Secret Agent', a majestic slice of hardcore roots Afrobeat, is Allen's debut for World Circuit and his first release since he became a founder member of The Good The Bad and The Queen (alongside Damon Albarn, Paul Simenon and Simon Tong). Afrobeat is currently enjoying an upsurge of interest and for fans of hip-hop, funk and jazz, Allen, holder of the Afrobeat flame, is today revered as its seminal living figure. |

| Geraldo Pino (aka Gerald Pine) is one of the hidden heroes of African popular music. A singer, guitarist and bandleader from Sierra Leone, Geraldo had a major influence on the burgeoning soul/funk/Afrobeat scene in West Africa during the 1960s and 70s. He made a huge impression on the young Fela Kuti who praised him effusively but his music has remained largely unheard for the past 30 years.
Pino’s proto-Afrobeat echoed the cultural preoccupations of the time – Black Power, African Unity, Heavy Vibes. Gerald Pine formed the Heartbeats in Freetown in 1960/61 as a pop band playing cover versions of British and American hit songs, although they soon adapted to the influence of pachanga, tcha tcha tcha and rumba music from the Congo, notably that international blend supplied by Ryco Jazz (see RETRO10CD) who were touring the West Africa region. As the latin influences grew, so Gerald Pine evolved into the more exotic sounding Geraldo Pino, although it was as a champion of American style funk that he made his mark. Pino made a deep and lasting impression on that iconoclastic figure Fela Anikulapo Kuti (then still known by his family name of Ransome Kuti). As Fela told the author Carlos Moore in his 1982 biography: "I was playing highlife jazz when Geraldo Pino came to town in '66 or a bit earlier with soul. That's what upset everything, man. He came to town with James Brown's music, singing, "Hey, hey, I feel all right, ta, ta, ta, ta. . . " And with such equipment you've never seen, man. This man was tearing Lagos to pieces. Wooooooooh, man. He had all Nigeria in his pocket. Made me fall right on my ass, man. Ahhhhhh, this Sierra Leonean guy was too much. Geraldo Pino from Sierra Leone. I'll never forget him. I never heard this kind of music before-o, I'm telling you. Only when I went to Ghana shortly after that did I hear music like that again, soul music. Shit! If you could have seen him, man. And his equipment . . . something else! Pino’s party grooves and the Funk Imperative which underlines his musical philosophy make these dance tracks sound just as vital today as they did back then. |

| Five Alarm Funk is a Vancouver-based, 12-piece rhythm machine that delivers a delirium-inducing live show fuelled by original funk and afro-beat grooves. The band’s horn and percussion-driven instrumental jams feature searing guitar leads and horn solos wailing and soaring above a four-man percussion maelstrom that is grounded by Neil Towers’ juicy bass lines.
The band’s wicked cross-rhythms and frenetic, costumed stage show appeals to jazz fans and clubs kids alike. Five Alarm Funk has carved out a word of mouth fan base from a series of crowd-pleasing performances at clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout Western Canada. Highlights include the band headlining the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver and opening for the Herbalizer at the Plaza of Nations. The group’s debut album has charted on college radio across the country including reaching #2 on Toronto’s CIUT station. Warner Music Canada nationally distributes the CD and it is available in record stores across the country. “Interaction between the crowd and the band is a huge part of the show, and we try to make every show an event. We’ve managed to get big crowds to our shows by word of mouth, friends telling friends about the band,” enthused guitarist and group spokesman Gabe Boothroyd. “There’s nothing like seeing 800 people at a sold-out show at Richard’s on Richards crouch down on the floor when our vocalist and drummer Tayo Branston tells them to ‘get low’ during a funky build-up.” The band’s playful, high-energy live show is fueled by skin-tight arrangements and raw, sweat-drenched passion. From its founding as a six-piece in 2003, the young band (average age is 23) has grown into one of the most exciting and unique groups in Canada. “There’s a huge afro-beat, Fela Kuti influence,” explained Boothroyd. “We take that and combine it with some James Brown and Kool and the Gang and then throw in a lot of youthful energy and reckless enthusiasm. Most people in the band started playing rock-oriented music, and that edge is still there in a lot of our playing and our stage presence.” Five Alarm Funk’s’ wacky costumes and stage antics guarantee a frenzied dance party, but the boys in the band can really play too. Five Alarm Funk can pack a dance floor, but they’ve got tons of jazz chops too. They’ve got it all. They’re the real deal. Check ‘em out! |

| Captain Yaba - Yaba Funk Roots (2003) |
| Citat: |
| 'A maestro of the two-stringed molo. . . who has produced a new sound that is both powerful, spiritual and highly danceable. The molo sets the tone and the drums follow in flawless harmony. Moreover, the Captain's roughly hewed voice is captivating.'
Opiyo Oloya, rootsworld.com In his short musical career Captain Yaba captivated listeners with his two-string gourd guitar grooves, and especially with the track Yaba Funk. He makes his instrument, the koliko (aka molo or xalam) sound like the root of all funk. Captain Yaba was a Fra Fra from the northern Ghana town of Bolgatanga where the country and the culture have more in common with Sahelian neighbours than the central and coastal regions where highlife rules. Yaba Funk Roots is a reissue of his 1996 album Tinanure, produced by Francis Fuster, the celebrated Sierra Leonean percussionist. Unfortunately Yaba died soon after that CD’s release. This RetroAfric reissue has been augmented with five tracks from the original Ghana sessions, which retain the vital edge of griot funk at which Yaba excelled. Call them premix, call them de-mix, these tracks bring added delight to a type of African music which is rarely heard in the West. |

Consistently one of the best and most unpredictable live artists around, his work since his breakthrough album "Intervision" (Warp, 1997) to a series of Afro-based albums with his band Kabu Kabu. Tony Allen continues to attract new fans as one of the greatest drummers alive today. Celebrated as the creator of the Afrobeat rhythm and a lynchpin of Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band, his recent work has included The Good, The Bad & The Queen collaboration with Damon Albarn and his first album for World Circuit Records released earlier this year, "Secret Agent". Recorded at Lovelite Studios in Berlin with further sessions this year in Finland and Paris, the Tenor / Allen collaboration whips up a raw, heavy analogue sound mixing the full range of Allen's Afrobeat repertoire with TenorТs off-kilter brew of dark humour, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and tight, firing musicianship. The sessions involved key members of TenorТs Kabu Kabu band. Highly recommended. It will be issued on CD around november 2nd 2oo9...buy it!! |

| Mulatu Astatke - New York - Addis - London (The Story Of Ethio-Jazz 1965-1975) (STRUT RECORDS 2009) |
| Kod: |
| Compilation. Released 9 November 2009.Fans of vintage Ethiopian music will know Mulatu Astatke – also spelled Astatqé – as the most mercurial and accessible figure unearthed by the ongoing Éthiopiques reissue series. When three pieces from the 1998 compilation Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale 1969-1974 (Éthiopiques 4) were featured in Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film Broken Flowers, Astatke’s lounge-y, Latin-flavoured ‘Ethio jazz’ justly became much more widely known.
The music here spans his early career, from 1965-75, after which the scene in the ‘swinging’ Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa went into decline during 18 years of dictatorship and repression. The fact that eight of the 20 tracks on this compilation also appear on Éthiopiques 4 (with another taken from volume 17, featuring the singer Tlahoun Gèssèssè) may be something of a letdown. However, the rest of the material, which covers his formative years in London and New York, will be of great interest. With its bizarre elephant trumpet intro, Spanish vocals and salsa-flavoured piano vamp, the 1966 recording I Faram Gami I Faram might easily be mistaken for someone else. But even though the earlier recording Shagu seems heavily influenced by New York’s nascent boogaloo scene (before the term had even been coined), Astatke’s pensive, playful vibraphone is unmistakeable. The tantalisingly short Mascaram Setaba is another fascinating curiosity. Despite also showcasing Astatke’s vibes, it could almost be an outtake from Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd’s classic 1962 album Jazz Samba. What’s really surprising is how Astatke managed to successfully mix such influences with full-on Ethiopian folklore; Ebo Lala bounces along to a brassy Latino groove, but also features an unhinged, growling vocal by Seifu Yohannes, and is based on a traditional Gurage folk song from southwest Ethiopia. The set was compiled by Miles Cleret of Soundway Records, and his sleeve notes offer the usual insightful comments, many based on personal contact with the artist and his experiences in Ethiopia. It’s just a shame that almost half of these tracks will already be familiar to many. Some of this space might more usefully have been taken up by material from Astatke’s recent fine Inspiration Information 3 album, recorded with London-based band The Heliocentrics, more of the unknown early recordings, or both |

| Lisbon has always been a stage for the meeting of several cultures, mostly due to the past of the city as the capital of a colonial empire in Africa and Latin America. Nowadays it is a huge pot of creativity which attracts artists from all over the world and it is a privileged space where musicians find each other, share ideas and mix rhythms. It is from this mixture that, in 2005, afrobeat collective Cacique..97 was born.
With musicians with Mozambican and Portuguese origins, this collective incorporates members from groups such as Cool Hipnoise, Philharmonic Weed and The Most Wanted, well known projects in the areas of funk, reggae and the afro sound. The passion for the music of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen has united these musicians for the pursuance of a common goal: to create a collective that mirrored the Lisbon mixture, by crossing the characteristic urban Nigerian rhythm which is afrobeat, with the musical tradition of the Portuguese-speaking African countries and of Brazil, whom has always been very present in the Portuguese capital. Cacique..97 intend to give birth to a global soundtrack of the new times without losing the activist approach and the promotion of social awareness so fond to afrobeat. The Portuguese band Cacique '97 is further proof that the Nigerian jazz-funk style known as afrobeat has become a truly international phenomenon. A big horn section over a driving bassline and multi-layered vocals means Cacique '97 can hold their own among the best Afrobeat bands anywhere in the world. |

| Pax Nicholas And The Nettey Family – Na Teef Know De Road of Teef (2009) |
| Citat: |
| Convinced of his skills as a drummer and singer, in 1971 Fela Anikulapo Kuti made Nicholas Addo-Nettey a full member of Africa 70 on congas and backing vocals. While playing with Fela and recording on all his releases between 1971 and 1978, Nicholas always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef in 1973. Na Teef... is a heavy afrofunk set, recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were also set to tape. Fela was not amused when he heard how strong the album was, reportedly telling Addo-Nettey "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!". And so it was; despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years. The story would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner, a true vinyl digger who found a copy somewhere in West Africa, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records. |

| Strut's Afrostrut label has slowly been uncovering a mine of Afro funk gold from the dusty vaults of Lagos, Nigeria. Some of the music has never been heard outside of Africa, some has never been heard at all, recorded but never released. Such is the case with Peter King's lost album, Shango. The album is a lost classic with hard Afro-funk dancefloor bombs sitting alongside more reflective, downtempo ghetto psychedelia. The lyrics are hard-hitting, borrowing the 'no sell out' messages of black power USA and the musicianship on the album is incredible - great players all locked into layers of rough Afro percussion. Simply an essential album for any Afrobeat or funk fan! Remastered. 2002. |

| As many western listeners have discovered through groups like the Antibalas Orchestra , Nigerian pop star Fela Kuti's 1970's invention called Afro-beat is anything but dead. Fela started out as a jazz player, branching out to highlife as a natural extension of this music—since it represented direct fusion between West African traditions and the rhythms, instruments, and styles of the New World (especially jazz). Highlife paid the bills, and when Fela Kuti brought funk into the mix, his music reached new heights. Suddenly he rocketed to stardom. Millions of listeners followed his every move.
Enter Najite. The drummer played congas with Fela, absorbing his musical approach and the specific ways in which it could be realized. On this disc, the latest of his recordings (which for the most part are unavailable in the U.S.), the Nigerian percussionist steps forward to lead his own ensemble. His music draws much more heavily from jazz than its predecessors, which renders it particularly accessible to listeners familiar with the New World improvisational tradition. Najite is quite direct about his heritage: "If you love Africa, raise up your hands!" (Hint: check out the record's title, which is quite ironic relative to the stew of styles here.) His group comprises 17 musicians, including four drummers. It's tight, flexible, and downright funky. The second tune, "Lasisi," takes an undulating beat, stringing it between dramatic horn heads and around solos by various instrumentalists, including—most notably—pianist Nate Morgan. Morgan travels eagerly through constantly evolving chordal voicings around a flowing theme. Najite himself goes out to lead percussionists and vocalists on the talking drum, a relatively unusual event in the old- school style. Rather than evoking all the myriad "syllables" of the instrument's flexible language, he directs it toward pitches and sonorities that reinforce the piece's theme. The leader is not at all afraid to pursue the blend of cross-cultural traditions that have defined West African popular music for decades. "Honesty" starts out with a minor theme reminiscent of East Asian music, heading into a festive Caribbean rhythm. Its extended lilt supports an unusually jazzy evocation of beach-side abandon, with the kind of interlaced West African drumming that practically begs the listener to get up and dance. Don't mind, your mother isn't watching. Whatever the intricate details of this recording, it's all about dance in the end. The five extended pieces on Africa Before Invasion range from seven to eleven minutes, allowing musicians and listeners alike to stretch out. No need to dwell on the lyrics—just dig the jam. |

| Here's a must have for every fan of Afrobeat music - 'REMEMBER FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI' - The eagerly-awaited album of the legendary bass- and tenor-guitar-player Oghene Kologbo.
He's one of the true legends of Afrobeat music. Kologbo olayed on 37 albums with Fela Kuti and the Africa 70. He's carrying on the tradition with 10 songs recorded with the Afrobeat Academy Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was a well known highlife musician. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela’s personal assistant and ‘tape recorder’. That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin. In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fosse, among others. In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin’s heaviest afrobeat ensemble. |
