| Citat: | An artiste of class whose music was inspired by his parents, the highlife crooner would be remembered for hit albums like, Ozondi Ewendi and Makojo. But before then, the legend had in his earlier days, released Enyi Mba Enyi, Late Patrice Lumumba, Nnamdi Azikwe, One Pound No Balance, Omonuju Aku, The First Raining Day, Onu Kwuru Njo Gekwu Mma, among many others.
Osadebe went through the mills of music making, and that accounted for his staying power on top of his profession. For instance, he started with what he tagged: Amakekwu, a genre that was in vogue in the 1950s. At different times, he played Kokoma of Ghanaian heritage, Kusimilaya, which was made popular by late Adeolu Akinsanya a.k.a. Baba Eto. By the time, he came up with his band, Osadebe soon became, what Fela was to afrobeat; a master.
With his Oyolima music, Osadebe succeeded in uniting his listeners across the country. His music is laden with strong messages and his lyrics are prophetic. He once confessed that, during his sojourn in the U.S, his fans often ascribed therapeutic effects to his songs.
Osadebe’s music growth drew from calypso, samba, rumba, jazz, waltz, all of which are the core formative elements of highlife in its rustic form. The outbreak of the civil war in 1967 significantly stalled the development of his art. By the mid-1970s, his career had reached its zenith with the release of Osadebe 75.
Osita was a nationalist and a detribalized Nigerian having used his talent to reach out to Nigerians of diverse tribes. He demonstrated it by picking his first wife from Abeokuta, incidentally, she was late Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s relation. By that, Osadebe became Fela’s in-law. But beyond that, the duo still spared time to fraternize on the platform of music.
He once recalled how Fela would come around to play with him in his club in Lagos, shortly after he formed the Koola Lobitos Band.
He even had to suspend his show in the U.S. in 1997 when the news of Fela’s death filtered into the concert hall in 1997. He did not only call for a minute’s silence in his honour, he ensured that Fela’s music was played non-stop for about 30 minutes.
In spite of the main headaches of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria(PMAN), the veteran artiste still stood by it even at old age. But he had a piece of advice for the leadership, PMAN should be decentralized and not be perceived as an association for only Lagos-based musicians. The elder artiste also counseled the younger generation of musicians to undergo apprenticeship. He decried a situation whereby someone who cannot play a musical instrument, still parades himself as a musician.
Osadebe’s regret was that in spite of the abundant talents in the country, the society don’t appreciate them.
Born in Atani Ogbaru, but raised in Onitsha, Anambra State, Osadebe started music as a chorister and a member of the schoolboys’ band. With time, he picked interest in traditional music genres before he had his break into contemporary music after watching a visiting band performed in Onitsha. He later approached the leader band and he obliged him to play an instrument and sing. By 1956, he went professional as a maracas player with the group, Empire Rhythm Skies. He moved to central Lagos in the late 1950s and that marked the beginning of his ascendancy to the apex of music entertainment in the country.
Mentored by the late ace trumpeter, Zeal Onyia, it was in apparent recognition of his immense contributions to the nation’s arts, culture and entertainment sector that he was honoured with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) by the Nigerian Government. He was also conferred with the traditional title of Ezeafuluke of Atani. |

| Kod: | | Tunde Williams - Mr. Big Mouth |
| Kod: | Essential Afrika 70 recordings, produced by Fela Kuti.
Babatunde 'Tunde' Williams was born in Nigeria, in 1943. Like Fela, his family was from Abeokuta, but his father was employed by the United Africa Company in the middle belt city of Makurdi, where Tunde was born in 1943. He attended primary school at Gboko Elementary School in the nearby town of Gboko, and later attended Katsina-Ala Middle School in the northern town of Katsina. Unbeknownst to most people, Tunde’s first instrument was percussion, and his earliest professional experience was as a conga, bongo, and traps player for various highlife bands in the early 1960s. By 1965 he was playing with the highlife band of Olu McFoy, and he later joined Atomic Eight, a highlife and copyright band from Aba in eastern Nigeria. It was in Atomic Eight that he befriended the bandleader Raymond Baba, a multi-instrumentalist who was proficient on both brass and woodwinds. Inspired by Baba’s example, Tunde switched from percussion to trumpet shortly thereafter, with Baba as his first teacher. He also cites Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis as formative influences on the instrument.
Tunde joined Fela’s Koola Lobitos as a trumpeter in late 1967, and remained with Fela through 1978, when he and several other bandmembers left the group acrimoniously following the Berlin Jazz Festival in September of that year. In Afrika 70, he was the most consistent soloist, and his trumpet improvisations graced virtually of the band’s 1970s recordings. The tracks for Mr. Big Mouth had been recorded in 1975, but by the time they were released in 1977, Fela was engaged in a bitter battle with the original label, Decca Records. As a result, many of Afrika 70’s Decca releases from 1977-8 fell through the proverbial cracks, and Mr. Big Mouth was unfortunately one of them. Although it is a great album, it was given little promotion and as a result, is known only to the most committed Afrobeat aficionados, even in Nigeria.
The music on Mr. Big Mouth is similar in feel and mood to other Afrika 70 releases from this time on Decca’s Afrodisia imprint such as Fela’s No Agreement, Stalemate, and Fear Not for Man, and Tony Allen’s No Accomodation for Lagos. The title track is typical of Afrika 70’s uptempo grooves and like much of Fela’s music the lyrics are socially-critical in tone, although unlike Fela’s songs, Tunde’s lyrics are not directed at the government. Rather, he says the title track was a commentary on “…some of the indigenous contractors at that time. The government would give these contractors money to complete a job, and instead they would take the money and surround themselves with women, fancy clothes, and flashy cars, and go around the town bragging like big shots. The jobs never got done, and many of them ended up going to jail for defrauding the government. That’s what I was singing about.” Tunde’s mid-tempo instrumental “The Beginning” (so named because it was his first piece of music to be recorded) is certainly one of the most infectious tracks to come out of Fela’s organization. The laid-back Afrobeat groove is dark and suspenseful, and one can easily hear why the song was often played during Afrika 70’s warm-up sets, as it perfectly sets the tone for a late, smoky night at the Afrika Shrine. |

| Kod: | | Kokolo - Heavy Hustling |
| Kod: | KOKOLO AFROBEAT ORCHESTRA's fourth album, HEAVY HUSTLING, finds the NYC powerhouse group expertly mashing up Fela Kuti stylings into James Brown classics with a twist of Latin and Jamaican flavors thrown into the mix. This album is without question their best offering to date and showcases KOKOLO at the height of its innovative powers. Kokolo, one of the most well known and with best reputation afrobeat act around with 4 albums, 14x 7" and 12" releases and numerous worldwide tours under the belt, made not just another by-the-numbers homage to "The Godfather of Soul": this record breathes new life into the genre and demonstrates what the contemporary deep funk scene sounds like.
Anticipated by heavily playlisted first single "Soul Power", on Heavy Hustlyng you'll find other great classics from "Mr.Dynamite" such as "please please please", "think", "it's a new day" and "bring it up" all coocked with the unique Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra style. More than an album...HEAVY HUSTLING is a sign of the times. If it doesn't make you wanna move, consider yourself officially dead!
Kokolo will do a worldwide tour starting from March 08 to launch the new album.
"Kokolo have got the groove.. Anyone wanting to get low down and dirty, should look no further. This will get the bodies on the dance floor moving like never before" **** Clash www.clashmusic.com"
"This is absolutely red-hot. The best thing that Kokolo have done by far." Dj Snowboy (Blues & Soul Magazine)

| Kod: | Xavier Rudd is a one-man band. On this album, he plays: guitars, drums, harmonica, didgeridoos, banjo, and ankle bells. Where else is he going to put the bells? There is nothing in the liner notes about Xavier Rudd keeping a cymbal strapped to the seat of his pants, although it wouldn't surprise me to find he does.
I don't play the didgeridoo and in fact, I wouldn't even know how to play it if you put one in my hands. I can tell you this much, though. Xavier Rudd knows how to play the didgeridoo and he produces some really cool sounds on them. The best example of his abilities with a didgeridoo is on "Yirra Kurl," a live track that really conveys his energy. I haven't seen him live, but I sure would like to, just to see how he manages all the instruments he uses.
Vocally, Xavier Rudd is similar to Dave Matthews, although the X-man doesn't do as many strange vocal sounds as Dave Matthews. If I had to compare Rudd to one other person, it would be Steve Earle. Now, I have to make it clear that Rudd sounds nothing like Steve Earle. However, he writes very outspoken lyrics railing against violence ("Let Me Be") and corporations ("GBA"). Also, like Earle, Rudd writes beautiful songs about loving and losing ("Chances" and "Journey Song").
Rudd also takes on the issue of relations between the whites and aborigines of Australia. Clearly, he is not afraid to speak his mind about important issues, like Bob Marley, who is represented in Rudd's cover of "No Woman, No Cry." I admire that a lot. I think we need more artists to stand up and speak out for change.
I don't know what Xavier Rudd would be filed under in your local record store. I imagine it would probably be in the world music section, but I think Xavier Rudd defies classification. That's another thing he has working in his favor. If you like multi-talented, outspoken artists, this is an album you need to have. |

Nigerian Aiyekooto combines enchanting afrobeat with older Ghana-born genres of highlife and funky. Living in Helsinki since 2005, he has surrounded himself with the impressive Afrobeat International band, consisting of renowned rhythm musicians. Before coming to Finland the band’s leader Babatunde Akerele composed, wrote lyrics and arranged his 70’s afro sound in Lagos, Nigeria.
Aiyekooto & His Afrobeat International were chosen the best band of 2007 at the Funk Awards gala in February. The 20-member band, serving exotic rhythms and positive vibrations, has thrown several energetic and enthusiastic gigs at clubs and festivals around the country. The band is a real dance floor killer - it’s almost impossible to avoid the urge to dance to their seductive rhythms. When the audience is in the groove, they don’t want to let the band go off stage.

| Kod: | | Feso Trombone - Freedom Train (1984) |
| Kod: | | Fesobi Olawaiye, better known as Feso Trombone, played trombone with Fela Kuti in his country of origin Nigeria. He moved to Belgium in the late 70s, early 80s to develop his solo career as a musician. In the early 80s (83 or 84, I'm not sure), he recorded this record called Freedom Train on a local label called Antler Records (the label from Maurice Engelen from Pragha Khan), that mostly issued new-wave and early electronical music. But Freedom Train is an exception in Antlers catalogue. It is a pure Afro Funk/Afro Beat album. There's the very whipping up 'Beautiful World', that starts with a drum break, but my favorite track is 'Beginning of the end', with this typical hypnotic afro funk groove. The title track 'Freedom Train' was compiled on Essential Afrobeat: The Very Best Of Afrobeat, Selected By Dele Sosimi. This record was released on cd as well. |

| Kod: | Tony Allen - Secret Agent
(CD) World Circuit WCD 082, 2009-06-08
Tony Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa's finest kit drummer and one of the continent's most influential musicians. His playing draws on four different styles - highlife, soul/funk, jazz and traditional Nigerian drumming. A unique and mighty sound. Together with Fela Kuti (with whom he played for 15 years) Allen co-created Afrobeat - the hard driving, horns rich, funk-infused, politically insurrectionary style which became such a dominant force in African music and such an influence worldwide. 'Secret Agent', a majestic slice of hardcore roots Afrobeat, is Allen's debut for World Circuit and his first release since he became a founder member of The Good The Bad and The Queen (alongside Damon Albarn, Paul Simenon and Simon Tong). Afrobeat is currently enjoying an upsurge of interest and for fans of hip-hop, funk and jazz, Allen, holder of the Afrobeat flame, is today revered as its seminal living figure. |

| Kod: | Geraldo Pino (aka Gerald Pine) is one of the hidden heroes of African popular music. A singer, guitarist and bandleader from Sierra Leone, Geraldo had a major influence on the burgeoning soul/funk/Afrobeat scene in West Africa during the 1960s and 70s. He made a huge impression on the young Fela Kuti who praised him effusively but his music has remained largely unheard for the past 30 years.
Pino’s proto-Afrobeat echoed the cultural preoccupations of the time – Black Power, African Unity, Heavy Vibes.
Gerald Pine formed the Heartbeats in Freetown in 1960/61 as a pop band playing cover versions of British and American hit songs, although they soon adapted to the influence of pachanga, tcha tcha tcha and rumba music from the Congo, notably that international blend supplied by Ryco Jazz (see RETRO10CD) who were touring the West Africa region. As the latin influences grew, so Gerald Pine evolved into the more exotic sounding Geraldo Pino, although it was as a champion of American style funk that he made his mark. Pino made a deep and lasting impression on that iconoclastic figure Fela Anikulapo Kuti (then still known by his family name of Ransome Kuti). As Fela told the author Carlos Moore in his 1982 biography:
"I was playing highlife jazz when Geraldo Pino came to town in '66 or a bit earlier with soul. That's what upset everything, man. He came to town with James Brown's music, singing, "Hey, hey, I feel all right, ta, ta, ta, ta. . . " And with such equipment you've never seen, man. This man was tearing Lagos to pieces. Wooooooooh, man. He had all Nigeria in his pocket. Made me fall right on my ass, man. Ahhhhhh, this Sierra Leonean guy was too much. Geraldo Pino from Sierra Leone. I'll never forget him. I never heard this kind of music before-o, I'm telling you. Only when I went to Ghana shortly after that did I hear music like that again, soul music. Shit! If you could have seen him, man. And his equipment . . . something else!
Pino’s party grooves and the Funk Imperative which underlines his musical philosophy make these dance tracks sound just as vital today as they did back then. |

| Citat: | Five Alarm Funk is a Vancouver-based, 12-piece rhythm machine that delivers a delirium-inducing live show fuelled by original funk and afro-beat grooves. The band’s horn and percussion-driven instrumental jams feature searing guitar leads and horn solos wailing and soaring above a four-man percussion maelstrom that is grounded by Neil Towers’ juicy bass lines.
The band’s wicked cross-rhythms and frenetic, costumed stage show appeals to jazz fans and clubs kids alike. Five Alarm Funk has carved out a word of mouth fan base from a series of crowd-pleasing performances at clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout Western Canada. Highlights include the band headlining the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver and opening for the Herbalizer at the Plaza of Nations. The group’s debut album has charted on college radio across the country including reaching #2 on Toronto’s CIUT station. Warner Music Canada nationally distributes the CD and it is available in record stores across the country.
“Interaction between the crowd and the band is a huge part of the show, and we try to make every show an event. We’ve managed to get big crowds to our shows by word of mouth, friends telling friends about the band,” enthused guitarist and group spokesman Gabe Boothroyd. “There’s nothing like seeing 800 people at a sold-out show at Richard’s on Richards crouch down on the floor when our vocalist and drummer Tayo Branston tells them to ‘get low’ during a funky build-up.”
The band’s playful, high-energy live show is fueled by skin-tight arrangements and raw, sweat-drenched passion. From its founding as a six-piece in 2003, the young band (average age is 23) has grown into one of the most exciting and unique groups in Canada.
“There’s a huge afro-beat, Fela Kuti influence,” explained Boothroyd. “We take that and combine it with some James Brown and Kool and the Gang and then throw in a lot of youthful energy and reckless enthusiasm. Most people in the band started playing rock-oriented music, and that edge is still there in a lot of our playing and our stage presence.”
Five Alarm Funk’s’ wacky costumes and stage antics guarantee a frenzied dance party, but the boys in the band can really play too. Five Alarm Funk can pack a dance floor, but they’ve got tons of jazz chops too. They’ve got it all. They’re the real deal. Check ‘em out! |

| Kod: | | Captain Yaba - Yaba Funk Roots (2003) |
| Citat: | 'A maestro of the two-stringed molo. . . who has produced a new sound that is both powerful, spiritual and highly danceable. The molo sets the tone and the drums follow in flawless harmony. Moreover, the Captain's roughly hewed voice is captivating.'
Opiyo Oloya, rootsworld.com
In his short musical career Captain Yaba captivated listeners with his two-string gourd guitar grooves, and especially with the track Yaba Funk. He makes his instrument, the koliko (aka molo or xalam) sound like the root of all funk.
Captain Yaba was a Fra Fra from the northern Ghana town of Bolgatanga where the country and the culture have more in common with Sahelian neighbours than the central and coastal regions where highlife rules.
Yaba Funk Roots is a reissue of his 1996 album Tinanure, produced by Francis Fuster, the celebrated Sierra Leonean percussionist. Unfortunately Yaba died soon after that CD’s release. This RetroAfric reissue has been augmented with five tracks from the original Ghana sessions, which retain the vital edge of griot funk at which Yaba excelled. Call them premix, call them de-mix, these tracks bring added delight to a type of African music which is rarely heard in the West. |

| Kod: | | Jimi Tenor and Tony Allen-Inspiration Information 4 |
| Kod: | Strut's Inspiration Information series moves on from the critically
acclaimed Mulatu Astatke / The Heliocentrics collaboration with the
fourth album in the series, a mouth-watering head to head between
Finnish maverick Jimi Tenor and Afrobeat drumming legend, Tony
Allen. Jimi Tenor remains a fascinating enigma in modern day music.
Consistently one of the best and most unpredictable live artists
around, his work since his breakthrough album "Intervision" (Warp,
1997) to a series of Afro-based albums with his band Kabu Kabu.
Tony Allen continues to attract new fans as one of the greatest
drummers alive today. Celebrated as the creator of the Afrobeat
rhythm and a lynchpin of Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band, his recent
work has included The Good, The Bad & The Queen collaboration with
Damon Albarn and his first album for World Circuit Records released
earlier this year, "Secret Agent". Recorded at Lovelite Studios in
Berlin with further sessions this year in Finland and Paris, the
Tenor / Allen collaboration whips up a raw, heavy analogue sound
mixing the full range of Allen's Afrobeat repertoire with TenorТs
off-kilter brew of dark humour, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and tight,
firing musicianship. The sessions involved key members of TenorТs
Kabu Kabu band.
Highly recommended. It will be issued on CD around november 2nd

| Kod: | | Mulatu Astatke - New York - Addis - London (The Story Of Ethio-Jazz 1965-1975) (STRUT RECORDS 2009) |
| Kod: | Compilation. Released 9 November 2009.Fans of vintage Ethiopian music will know Mulatu Astatke – also spelled Astatqé – as the most mercurial and accessible figure unearthed by the ongoing Éthiopiques reissue series. When three pieces from the 1998 compilation Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale 1969-1974 (Éthiopiques 4) were featured in Jim Jarmusch’s 2005 film Broken Flowers, Astatke’s lounge-y, Latin-flavoured ‘Ethio jazz’ justly became much more widely known.
The music here spans his early career, from 1965-75, after which the scene in the ‘swinging’ Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa went into decline during 18 years of dictatorship and repression. The fact that eight of the 20 tracks on this compilation also appear on Éthiopiques 4 (with another taken from volume 17, featuring the singer Tlahoun Gèssèssè) may be something of a letdown. However, the rest of the material, which covers his formative years in London and New York, will be of great interest.
With its bizarre elephant trumpet intro, Spanish vocals and salsa-flavoured piano vamp, the 1966 recording I Faram Gami I Faram might easily be mistaken for someone else. But even though the earlier recording Shagu seems heavily influenced by New York’s nascent boogaloo scene (before the term had even been coined), Astatke’s pensive, playful vibraphone is unmistakeable.
The tantalisingly short Mascaram Setaba is another fascinating curiosity. Despite also showcasing Astatke’s vibes, it could almost be an outtake from Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd’s classic 1962 album Jazz Samba.
What’s really surprising is how Astatke managed to successfully mix such influences with full-on Ethiopian folklore; Ebo Lala bounces along to a brassy Latino groove, but also features an unhinged, growling vocal by Seifu Yohannes, and is based on a traditional Gurage folk song from southwest Ethiopia.
The set was compiled by Miles Cleret of Soundway Records, and his sleeve notes offer the usual insightful comments, many based on personal contact with the artist and his experiences in Ethiopia. It’s just a shame that almost half of these tracks will already be familiar to many. Some of this space might more usefully have been taken up by material from Astatke’s recent fine Inspiration Information 3 album, recorded with London-based band The Heliocentrics, more of the unknown early recordings, or both |

CACIQUE '97-CACIQUE '97 (2009.)
| Citat: | Lisbon has always been a stage for the meeting of several cultures, mostly due to the past of the city as the capital of a colonial empire in Africa and Latin America. Nowadays it is a huge pot of creativity which attracts artists from all over the world and it is a privileged space where musicians find each other, share ideas and mix rhythms. It is from this mixture that, in 2005, afrobeat collective Cacique..97 was born.
With musicians with Mozambican and Portuguese origins, this collective incorporates members from groups such as Cool Hipnoise, Philharmonic Weed and The Most Wanted, well known projects in the areas of funk, reggae and the afro sound.
The passion for the music of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen has united these musicians for the pursuance of a common goal: to create a collective that mirrored the Lisbon mixture, by crossing the characteristic urban Nigerian rhythm which is afrobeat, with the musical tradition of the Portuguese-speaking African countries and of Brazil, whom has always been very present in the Portuguese capital.
Cacique..97 intend to give birth to a global soundtrack of the new times without losing the activist approach and the promotion of social awareness so fond to afrobeat.
The Portuguese band Cacique '97 is further proof that the Nigerian jazz-funk style known as afrobeat has become a truly international phenomenon.
A big horn section over a driving bassline and multi-layered vocals means Cacique '97 can hold their own among the best Afrobeat bands anywhere in the world. |

| Kod: | | Pax Nicholas And The Nettey Family – Na Teef Know De Road of Teef (2009) |
| Citat: | | Convinced of his skills as a drummer and singer, in 1971 Fela Anikulapo Kuti made Nicholas Addo-Nettey a full member of Africa 70 on congas and backing vocals. While playing with Fela and recording on all his releases between 1971 and 1978, Nicholas always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef in 1973. Na Teef... is a heavy afrofunk set, recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were also set to tape. Fela was not amused when he heard how strong the album was, reportedly telling Addo-Nettey "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!". And so it was; despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years. The story would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner, a true vinyl digger who found a copy somewhere in West Africa, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records. |

Peter King-Shango
| Citat: | | Strut's Afrostrut label has slowly been uncovering a mine of Afro funk gold from the dusty vaults of Lagos, Nigeria. Some of the music has never been heard outside of Africa, some has never been heard at all, recorded but never released. Such is the case with Peter King's lost album, Shango. The album is a lost classic with hard Afro-funk dancefloor bombs sitting alongside more reflective, downtempo ghetto psychedelia. The lyrics are hard-hitting, borrowing the 'no sell out' messages of black power USA and the musicianship on the album is incredible - great players all locked into layers of rough Afro percussion. Simply an essential album for any Afrobeat or funk fan! Remastered. 2002. |

Najite Olokun Prophecy-Africa Before Invasion
| Citat: | As many western listeners have discovered through groups like the Antibalas Orchestra , Nigerian pop star Fela Kuti's 1970's invention called Afro-beat is anything but dead. Fela started out as a jazz player, branching out to highlife as a natural extension of this music—since it represented direct fusion between West African traditions and the rhythms, instruments, and styles of the New World (especially jazz). Highlife paid the bills, and when Fela Kuti brought funk into the mix, his music reached new heights. Suddenly he rocketed to stardom. Millions of listeners followed his every move.
Enter Najite. The drummer played congas with Fela, absorbing his musical approach and the specific ways in which it could be realized. On this disc, the latest of his recordings (which for the most part are unavailable in the U.S.), the Nigerian percussionist steps forward to lead his own ensemble. His music draws much more heavily from jazz than its predecessors, which renders it particularly accessible to listeners familiar with the New World improvisational tradition. Najite is quite direct about his heritage: "If you love Africa, raise up your hands!" (Hint: check out the record's title, which is quite ironic relative to the stew of styles here.)
His group comprises 17 musicians, including four drummers. It's tight, flexible, and downright funky. The second tune, "Lasisi," takes an undulating beat, stringing it between dramatic horn heads and around solos by various instrumentalists, including—most notably—pianist Nate Morgan. Morgan travels eagerly through constantly evolving chordal voicings around a flowing theme. Najite himself goes out to lead percussionists and vocalists on the talking drum, a relatively unusual event in the old- school style. Rather than evoking all the myriad "syllables" of the instrument's flexible language, he directs it toward pitches and sonorities that reinforce the piece's theme.
The leader is not at all afraid to pursue the blend of cross-cultural traditions that have defined West African popular music for decades. "Honesty" starts out with a minor theme reminiscent of East Asian music, heading into a festive Caribbean rhythm. Its extended lilt supports an unusually jazzy evocation of beach-side abandon, with the kind of interlaced West African drumming that practically begs the listener to get up and dance. Don't mind, your mother isn't watching.
Whatever the intricate details of this recording, it's all about dance in the end. The five extended pieces on Africa Before Invasion range from seven to eleven minutes, allowing musicians and listeners alike to stretch out. No need to dwell on the lyrics—just dig the jam. |

The Los Angeles Times calls it "an early contender for the warmest, most life-affirming listen of 2010." The Globe and Mail gives it four stars, hearing a "musical state of grace." The Philadelphia Daily News gives the album an A, calling it "a thing of gossamer beauty ... haunting, genteel, intricate and magical." Oghene Kologbo & Afrobeat Academy- Remember Fela Anikulapo Kuti
| Citat: | Here's a must have for every fan of Afrobeat music - 'REMEMBER FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI' - The eagerly-awaited album of the legendary bass- and tenor-guitar-player Oghene Kologbo.
He's one of the true legends of Afrobeat music. Kologbo olayed on 37 albums with Fela Kuti and the Africa 70. He's carrying on the tradition with 10 songs recorded with the Afrobeat Academy
Guitar legend Oghene Kologbo was born in Warri, Nigeria in 1957. His father was a well known highlife musician. When Kologbo was a teenager, he began performing with the revolutionary Afrobeat master Fela Kuti. Kologbo went on to record more than 50 sides with Africa 70. He played the hypnotic tenor guitar lines, but often recorded bass and rhythm guitar too. Kologbo was Fela’s personal assistant and ‘tape recorder’. That is, it was his job to remember the melodies Fela would sing to him late at night, then teach them to the band at rehearsal the next day. In 1978, after a show at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Kologbo left the band (along with Tony Allen and a few others) and stayed in Berlin.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Kologbo worked with the legendary but short-lived Roots Anabo. He also toured and recorded with King Sunny Ade, Tony Allen, and Brenda Fosse, among others.
In 2005, Kologbo began working with the Afrobeat Academy, Berlin’s heaviest afrobeat ensemble. |
