Manic Street Preachers return with their ninth studio album, Journal For Plague Lovers. The album follows the hugely successful and critically acclaimed 2007 release Send Away The Tigers, and the induction of the band into the NME’s Hall Of Fame with their naming as the "NME Godlike Genius" for 2008. Produced by Steve Albini and recorded live at Rockfield Studios in Wales during the Winter of 2008, the album features lyrics left behind by former guitarist Richey Edwards across all 13 new tracks. An original piece of Jenny Saville’s art is the cover of Journal for Plague Lovers, whose painting graced the cover of 1994’s ‘The Holy Bible’. Musically the band draw on their classic Holy Bible sound with elements of Nirvana’s In Utero, as well as a delicate, beautiful acoustic side.
Elvis Costello, as musically restless as he's ever been, is set to launch a new album on June 2. Titled Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, the album is produced by T-Bone Burnett, whose relationship with Costello goes back some way, Burnett having produced 1986's King of America and 1989's Spike. Costello is joined on the new album by "some of the most highly regarded recording artists and musicians in traditional American country music, bluegrass and beyond,"
Ten of the 13 songs on the new album are previously unrecorded. Two of them ("Sulphur to Sugarcane" and "The Crooked Line") were co-written with Burnett and one ("I Felt The Chill") was co-written with Loretta Lynn. This album is the first since King of America to be rooted primarily in acoustic music, although it's not Costello's first involvement with American country music, the influence of which can be heard in a good deal of his other work (not to mention his album of country covers, Almost Blue).
The musicians on the album, dubbed "The Sugarcanes", will be joining Costello on the tour.

The High Plane Drifters are Wesley Stephenson on Drums and Timothy Oxnard on vocals and guitar, they both come from Stockton on Tees in the north east of England. Wes has been playing drums since the age of 12, since then he has become a drummer of phenomenal power. Tim has also been playing his instrument since the age of 12 and has developed a unique playing style all of his own. They have been playing together for 5 years now and still are going from strength to strength.
Together they have inspired and excited audiences with their electrifying live set, betraying their audience’s ears with their full sound. Their recording output of two e.p's and an LP have sold around the globe. Although they have had interest from many major and minor record labels their LP was financed by the winnings of the PRS ATOM award, a nomination only award that they won, being only one of three winners in the UK, the only band from the north of England to do so.
They have also landed themselves a publishing deal in the states with Hunnypot publishing in Los Angeles who approached them to sign a deal; they join a staple of artists as diverse as Clutch, The Victorian English Gentlemen’s Club, Joan Jett and the Bloody Beetroots amongst others.
Their unique sound has been described as a two man musical explosion that patrols over half a century of blues and roll history & a two man band with a four man sound. The High Plane Drifters call themselves a psychedelic garage blues two piece, but it is often agreed that their sound displays a more varied influence than that, not being straight 3 chord garage wonders with a blues riff or two for good measure, but two men who actually think about what they are about and what they are doing.
They have toured all parts of the British Isles and are now set to tour Europe and the United States after invites from promoters there. They have played gigs with stateside bands such as the The Black Diamond Heavies, The Immortal Lee County Killers, The Soledad Brothers, The Hentchmen, Dooley Wilson who they also released a split e.p with, as well as acoustic artists such as Benjamin Wetherill and Serious Sam Barrett.
Shortly before he died John Peel was impressed enough to play their demo, and this was long before they released any records, they have also been played by Mark Lamarr on Radio 2, Vic Galloway on Radio 1, and good underground stations like Artrocker and Beatroot Radio, plus a host of other stations in America, Croatia, Portugal, France and Israel.
Considering this is a group that have achieved this with their self released records on their own label, and have largely organised their own tours with limited resources and hard work they remain optimistic, open minded and excited about the future and what it is to offer, and it seems right now that the world is ready to offer it a great deal more than obscurity.

At the end of April 1967, “Hardest Working Man In Show Business” was seeking a new female vocalist for his Revue to replace the departing Vicki Anderson.
After the gig ended and the hall had cleared, Brown’s bandleader, Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, brought Marva onto the stage and went through some songs with her. He was evidently impressed by her audition and strongly urged The Godfather to hire the 23-year-old singer.
By May, Marva was riding on the Brown tour bus. She also signed to the funk meister’s record company, the Cincinnati-based King label,
In June 1967, Marva joined Brown and his entourage at Harlem's legendary Apollo Theatre, where Soul Brother #1 recorded his second landmark in-concert album, Live At The Apollo Volume II. She duetted with Brown on the album's energetic opener, Think.
In 1969, Marva had her first R&B hit, It's My Thing, and intended as an answer song to The Isley Brothers’ It’s Your Thing.
Further funk 45s, Things Got To Get Better and I Made A Mistake Because It's Only You, also made their presence felt on the US R&B Top 40. followed by this album
By the end of 1969, Marva decided it was time to leave the James Brown camp. Her final engagement with Mr. Dynamite was at The Apollo Theatre just before Christmas in December 1969.
King issued a second LP, Live & Lowdown At The Apollo, in early 1970,

At Swim Two Birds - Before You Left (Vespertine & Son 2009)
It’s somewhat of a double-edged sword for anyone brave enough to be romantically entangled with Roger Quigley (who trades solo as At Swim Two Birds and also under a band umbrella as one of The Montgolfier Brothers). On the one hand, a Quigley relationship is pre-destined to end in an emotional cataclysm, to be deconstructed in painful detail just a few notches down from the indiscreetly lurid prose of Arab Strap’s Aidan Moffat. On the other hand, the resultant navel-gazing will be dressed in the tailored-threads of old-fashioned chivalry and beatifically saturnine moodscapes. It’s a dichotomous quiddity that gives British bedsit balladeers a good name, as this third At Swim Two Birds long-player attests.
With the opening almost a cappella eeriness of “Intro,” Quigley enunciates the core recurring lyrical refrain of Before You Left, as if it were a self-deluding manifesto commitment; “Before you left I told myself this is a good thing/The time and space to sort myself out.” From thereon in, Quigley steers the record through waves of epic intimacy, like a broken man staring ruefully through the condensation of a Salford greasy-spoon café window, daydreaming vividly of lost love(s).
Lyrically, Quigley draws diligently from the same wells as seminal break-up concept albums like Lee Hazlewood’s Requiem For An Almost Lady, Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks, Smog’s The Doctor Came At Dawn and Elliott Smith’s XO; apportioning blame with a mixture of self-immolating regret and veiled-bitterness, as well as dwelling near-tearfully on the good times before the rot of irreversible bleakness set-in. Musically, Quigley glides his murmuring multi-tracked croon across a cohesively-fashioned surface that subtly cross-references a spectrum of those with similarly melancholic persuasions. Hence, the skeletal minimalism of “I Must Be Losing You” and the electronically-framed “Let Her Go” recall the cruelly-forgotten lush extremities of early lo-fi Baby Bird wares, such as I Was Born A Man and Bad Shave. The magisterial string-adorned “The March of The Kings” nods respectfully to both Scott Walker and Tindersticks, whereas the elegiac “No Fear” is painted with gentler shades of Piano Magic’s 4ADisms. Elsewhere, “Dead of Night” cops a sneaky-but-successful feel of Richard Hawley’s retro Sinatra-via-Sheffield evocations whilst the plaintive acoustics of “The Night We Ran Away” tip a hat to Leonard Cohen’s Songs From A Room.
Overall, Roger Quigley’s soul-baring may be a pain in the heart for him, but it’s a generous medicine to the ears for the rest of us. So although heavy with an omnipresent tristfulness, Before You Left is still a redemptive and uplifting affair for those looking to deeply drown their sorrows and then pick themselves up again, to find another person to fall in (and possibly out of) love with. On the heels of what has been both an extremely busy and fulfilling year, Camera Obscura release a double A-side holiday 7" titled The Blizzard. Featuring a cover of Jim Reeves "The Blizzard," and album track "Swans" from My Maudlin Career.
Three years ago, Midlake released The Trials Of Van Occupanther, a sweetly harmonized, intimately rocking sophomore album that took them far away from their native Denton, TX, placing them on big tours and year-end lists and the like. This third album's taken time, by design. As they told Jessica in their Progress Report, "We didn't know exactly what we wanted, but we know we didn't want to make the same album as last time. We could have made 10 albums with the amount of time we've spent, but that doesn't mean they'd be saying anything great." Instead they committed to 40-hour work weeks in order to move away from the last record's "Fleetwood Mac-y America" with a shift toward, at least in part, "British folk scene of late '60s stuff." The set finally has a release date -- 2/2 via Bella Union in the States, and the day before in the UK -- and an official title in The Courage Of Others.

Mulatu Astatke- Mulatu Steps Ahead(Strut 2010.)
Following his acclaimed Inspiration Information collaboration with The Heliocentrics, the Father of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke presents his brand new studio album, Mulatu Steps Ahead, this Spring.
The album explores new directions in fusions of Western jazz with Ethiopian modes, moving forward the pioneering sound Mulatu developed during the '60s and '70s, showcased on the recent Strut compilation New York - Addis - London. For the new album, tracks were recorded with members of Either/Orchestra in Boston, with contributions by traditional Ethiopian musicians in Addis, members of The Heliocentrics and some of the U.K.'s leading jazz and African players during the final sessions in London in November 2009.
Each track on the album tells its own story. The reflective, meandering opener, "Radcliffe," was composed specifically for the Radcliffe Institute during Mulatu's time lecturing at Harvard in Boston – the original score is now framed on the wall there. "The Way To Nice" was written and arranged on the tour bus during Mulatu's recent French dates. "With this track, you are traveling on a long journey, talking and thinking," he explains. "It was inspired by the many beautiful places on the coast road around Nice."
"Assosa" adapts traditional music from the Assosa tribes in North-Western Ethiopia and "Mulatu's Mood" re-works a Mulatu jazz fusion composition from the early '90s into a new swinging Afro high life arrangement. "I wanted to use West African styles within this version and try new ways of using the beautiful sound of the kora," explains Mulatu.
"Boogaloo" and "I Faram Gami I Faram" reprise Mulatu classics with new, fuller scores while the bonus digital track "Derashe" highlights the traditional diminishing scales of the Derashe people of Southern Ethiopia, a musical technique that would later feature in the classical compositions of Debussy and the jazz of Charlie Parker. Says Mulatu, "Many debate how this music developed but the Derashe have played these scales for centuries. It is an untold story.
The .357 String Band – Lightning From the North (2010)

Musical fads are a double-edged sword…or are they a blessing and a curse? Either way, with each new “movement”, whether it be Texas/Red Dirt or Freak-Folk or whatever, we see an influx of artists that, thanks to the artists who initially drew the attention of the masses to a certain trendy style, get to bask in the glow of a spotlight, even if their actual talent doesnt necessarily warrant as such. Perhaps the fad that has most flummoxed me in the past couple of years is what I call the “String Band Craze”. For every OCMS, Avett Brothers or Hackensaw Boys there seems to be a million feckless, benign wannabees that send their CD’s out to bloggers because hey, they have a banjo and Pro-Tools on their laptop. Oh yeah, they ALL claim to not only be rootsy-real, but oh so very punk as well. Yeah.
Well, the new record from Milwaukee’s .357 String Band has thankfully renewed my faith in whatever sub-genre this type of rootsy music really fits into. In fact, I think it’s safe to assume that these guys couldn’t possibly care less about fitting into a certain style or marketing themselves to a new and homogenized demographic that might respond to certain trends that are deemed hip or progressive.
Lightning From the North,.357’s third full-length album is indeed that bluegrass album with a punk heart that so many other records wish they could be when they grow up and are old enough to not only buy lottery tickets, but to also rob the store they’ll buy those tickets from. Crisp but grimey, the authority with which these pickers ply their craft is remarkable. The authentic, boozy and brawling vocals of Derrick Dunn are often augmented by the hillbilly harmonies that are yelped in a backwoods-style call and response with the rest of the band. These 14 songs simply tear it up. Take notes, wannabees.
Lee "Scratch" Perry, Jamaica's mad studio genius, has been anthologised before, sometimes shoddily. Most notable - for the right reasons - is 1997's three-disc Arkology set, which represents the best of his early to mid-1970s Black Ark Studio years - before he burned the place down, that is. I Am The Upsetter sees Trojan, currently on a roll with a whole slew of imaginative and well-researched reggae compilations, attempting to do his entire career justice, or at least from 1967 through to 1978, which for argument's sake, is about as good as it got.
To try to call a collection from as sprawling an output as Perry's "definitive" would be wholly subjective. The absence of Junior Murvin's Police And Thieves in favour of Roots Train Number One, or the substitution of Max Romeo's Chase The Devil or War In A Babylon with his Public Enemy Number One proves this is not the intention. Anyone who doesn't already own a copy of Police And Thieves probably wouldn't think of approaching a four-disc set anyway. Murvin's 'version', Bad Weed, does make an appearance though.
I Am The Upsetter runs chronologically, kicking off with Perry's first productions after leaving Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One, such as his own People Funny Boy, which uses a screaming baby as a hook line, and the title track. Dave Barker's hit Shocks of the Mighty sits alongside early and significant recordings from U Roy, Junior Byles and yes, Bob Marley And The Wailers, whose Perry-produced Duppy Conqueror and Small Axe still sound as fresh and original as anything the band later did. The US R&B influence is there to be heard in much of Perry's early production work, a fast and frantic booming bass sound that just oozes adrenalin.
It's on disc two, with the slower sound that the 1970s ushered in, that Perry's distinctive, more understated but experimental studio sound starts to take over, complete with the mooing of cows or the splashing of running water as the mood took him.
By disc three, The Upsetter rhythm is in full swing, and while Augustus Pablo, Dillinger and Junior Delgado have all passed through the Black Ark's doors by this point, and are present and correct, there are also a number of obscurities to attract the seasoned collector.
The final disc concentrates solely on dub versions and instrumentals from the Black Ark years 1974-1978, a goldmine of rare and rootsy Jamaican B-sides. Chopping guitars give way to the hiss of a hi-hit before everything is swallowed by a well of dub once again, or is assaulted by one of the producer's bizarre interjections. Music is rarely feels as organic as these tracks. Lee Perry may have come from the country, but as his 'golden decade' shows, they never took the country out of him.
Not only is I Am The Upsetter a treasure trove that will please and impress even the most hardened collector, it's also very well presented. Perry enthusiasts Chris Lane and Lol Bell-Brown set the context for each disc, and Jeremy Collingwood's track by track commentary answers many of the questions the listener is bound to be asking, like "what the hell was that?".
‘BKO’ is the international abbreviation for Bamako Airport in Mali’s capital city. It is also the title of the forthcoming album by Dirtmusic, a group of rock’n’roll veterans from the USA and Australia, which was recorded at the famous Studio Bogolan in Bamako - set up by the late Ali Farka Touré.
All three members of Dirtmusic have a long lasting history as musicians and songwriters in various bands: Chris Eckman is the leader of acclaimed US band The Walkabouts, and has also collaborated with Willard Grant Conspiracy and many others. Chris Brokaw has collaborated with Evan Dando and The Lemonheads, Liz Phair and Thurston Moore. The two Americans are joined by Australian-born Hugo Race, the leader of True Spirit and one of the original members of The Bad Seeds. Eckman and Race were label mates and in 2006 they got together with Brokaw to form Dirtmusic. Dirtmusic’s first album, recorded in 2007 in Eckman’s adopted home city of Ljubljana, Slovenia, somehow got into the hands of the booker of Mali’s annual Festival of the Desert who invited them to perform.
Eckman had been a fan of African music for years, so when in 2008 he found himself silky dunes of Essakane at the 2008 Festival of the Desert, it was like a baptism, a revelation, an epiphany. “I spent those three days very much in a dream state,” Eckman recalls. “The music, the sounds, the sights...it was just something absolutely overwhelming.” Next to Dirtmusic’s tent was that of young Touareg desert blues/ rock band Tamikrest. The two bands found themselves jamming together almost non-stop and discovered that their ideas and music fit perfectly. It was clear that this jam somehow had to continue after the festival.
So a year later Dirtmusic returned to Mali to record their new album “BKO” – with Tamikrest backing them in the studio. Connecting in lateral ways, swapping jokes and mixing up English and French and Tamashek (the language of the Touaregs), the mutual language of both bands is really music, and the reunion became a jam session, a discussion in word and rhythm – traditional songs, Dirtmusic songs, Tamikrest songs, passing hybrids of the two. During their meeting in the desert they had played The Velvet Underground’s legendary “All Tomorrow’s Parties” together. When Brokaw struck up the first few chords of the song, Tamikrest just jumped right in without a second thought, as if they’d been listening to the Velvet Underground since the release of the ‘Banana’ album - which they hadn’t. Luckily, they recreated this jam in the studio to include on the album. The blend of sounds and influences on this track is stunning but also feels completely natural. The natural process continued throughout the recording. For instance, Tamikrest leader Ousmane Ag Mossa spontaneously sings in Tamashek over the groove to “Black Gravity” and a kind of fusion erupts between Dirtmusic and Tamikrest. (Whilst most songs are composed by either Eckman, Race or Brokaw, “Black Gravity” contains Ousmane’s own composition “Imidiwan”, meaning ‘friends’, which he ‘gave’ to his new friends of Dirtmusic to include inside their song “Black Gravity”.)
Other Malian stars paid visits to the studio: Fadimata Walet Oumar from the famous Touareg group Tartit lends her sublime vocals to “All Tomorrow’s Parties” and “Desert Wind”. Two master musicians from Toumani Diabate’s Symmetric Orchestra jam on several abstract pieces, with one of them, “Niger Sundown”, being included on the album, while guitar legend Lobi Traoré plays on closing track “Bring It Home”.
